Most clothes dryer problems can be repaired in a few hours with a use of several basic tools at home. However, there are dryer issues that need the attention of a professional.
To know which dryer problems you can repair on your own and which ones would require you to call a repairman, read the list below.
Problem #1: The Dryer Isn’t Tumbling, But the Motor Runs
Quick Fix: If the drum is not spinning but the motor runs, it is likely that your dryer has a broken belt. Remove the front cabinet panel and take the entire drum out of it. Pull the broken belt out carefully, and then route the new belt around the drum. Then, set back the drum into the dryer cabinet and put back the panel.
When to Call a Repairman: If the quick fix didn’t work, chances are there are problems with the switch. Adam Tulloch recommends calling a repairman in this instance, as switch problems typically require electrical repairs that could be dangerous.
Problem #2: The Dryer Isn’t Heating
Quick Fix: If the dryer produces no heat at all, check the settings first. Most dryers have settings where they would only blow out air instead of heat.
When to Call a Repairman: If the settings are correct, chances are your dryer have electronic ignition problems. The thermal fuse, radiant sensor, igniter, or gas valve coils in your dryer are likely broken. Since these parts are difficult to fix or replace, you need to ask a professional for help.
Problem #3: The Dryer Won’t Start
Quick Fix: Check first the circuit breaker or fuse box to make sure you don’t have a tripped circuit. If there’s no problem with power, chances are the door switch no longer functions properly. With a use of screwdrivers and pliers, you can easily replace the door switch.
When to Call a Repairman: If the dryer doesn’t start after you replace the door switch, you might have a thermal fuse problem. The thermal fuse is not easy to locate and replace, so you better call a repairman if this is the issue.
These three clothes dryer problems can be fixed through a DIY repair. However, if the problem is beyond your repair skills, you should never hesitate to ask for a professional help.
