Teens and young adults who cannot do without their daily dose of Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites are not new to the following things which they see at times on the platforms- slurs, offensive images and video clips of a mean spirit whose sole purpose is to stigmatize groups of people.

overweightWho are targeted?

According to the poll which surveyed youngsters belonging to the age group 14-24 years, overweight people are the most targeted. The other group that get slammed quite often online is that of the gays, although the poll found out that young people are likely to consider the slurs or the discriminatory images of these groups of people as mean spirited rather than as silly jokes.

However, as per the poll, potshots taken at women or at blacks will in all likelihood be regarded as mere jokes rather than be taken more seriously by young internet users. Additionally, the poll revealed that racial insults are more often than not considered as intentionally hurtful.
